Sir Steve Bullock, the directly-elected Mayor of Lewisham, has become one of the earliest public figures to state clearly how bad the coming cuts in local government spending are going to be. In an interview with News Shopper, he said they will be “shocking” and “the worst in living memory.”

He added: “We have to take £1 out of every £4 which is spent in Lewisham – so it goes without saying there’s going to be a pretty shocking list of savings.

“I can’t put a figure on it but I would guess there will be hundreds of job losses at the council. These are the worst cuts in living memory – worse than under Margaret Thatcher.”

The context for this is that ALL councils have been told to plan for a 25 per cent cut in central government grants alongside a council tax freeze. And, as Bullock points out, places like Lewisham have a lot of people living in them who work in the public sector in other boroughs. So the danger is of a double impact.
