Brockwell Park and Streatham fireworks up in smoke

FireworksWe’ve been dreading this day since we moved to Lambeth frankly, and not it has come: Free firework displays on Streatham Common and Brockwell Park axed in bid to save cash (From Streatham Guardian):

Lambeth Council announced on Thursday Brockwell Park and Streatham Common displays will not go ahead on November 5 due to “financial considerations.”

It will instead run a single event on Clapham Common, saving the town hall and estimated £35,000.

Councillor Florence Nosegbe, Lambeth’s cabinet member for culture, said the council could not justify three free firework displays when the town hall must save £20m this year and £62m over the next three years, largely due to Government cuts to finances.

We’ve been pretty grumpy about councillors making promises with money that isn’t there, so we can hardly complain about this. But a £35,000 saving from an event that people love and rather cherish and will probably kick and scream about (despite its relative unimportance)? Might be a PR own goal, this one.
